“We are all just walking each other home.”

what is spiritual Companioning?

  • A sacred and confidential conversation based on what emerges from your own heart’s yearning and inherent wisdom. It is not therapy.

  • A shared exploration of how the divine is manifesting in and as your own life lived in relationship with others without trying to “fix” you or anyone else in your life.

  • An opportunity to engage in spiritual practices that help you go deeper in your own journey without having a particular dogma imposed.

  • A chance to draw on ancient and modern sources of wisdom to light the path of love and service.

Is Spiritual Companioning for Me?

If you are yearning to

  • Be seen, heard and respected in a non-judgmental and confidential way.

  • Come home to yourself more deeply.

  • Be reminded of your own preciousness and belonging no matter what has happened or is happening in your life.

  • Broaden your range of practices and resources to sustain you on your journey. As my teacher, Jim Finley, likes to say: “Enlightenment is an accident and practice makes you accident prone.”

  • Discern and connect with what is most life-giving for you, what saddens your heart, what you want to let go of and what is waiting to be born in you.

then Spiritual Companioning may be for you. I would be honored to join you on your journey.

what might a session look like?

We will likely begin with a time of silence or guided meditation to call us into presence depending on what feels most nurturing to you. The time is yours to share what questions, yearnings, creative impulses, or emotions are most present for you. I will listen from a stance of curiosity, non-judgment, and positive regard. As I endeavor to mirror back to you what I have heard, I will ask open-hearted and open-ended questions intended to invite you to go deeper into your own wisdom. You will choose which of those promptings resonate with you and which to leave behind. If a story, poem, other text or image emerges for either of us, we may share those as well. We may try different spiritual practices depending on what feels called for (i.e. guided imagery, a Metta (Lovingkindness) or gratitude practice, etc.). As our time together draws to a close, I will check in with you as to whether you would like a closing prayer or shared time of silence.

If you live in my area, we can meet in person in my office. We can also always meet remotely on Zoom or FaceTime.

who has influenced me on my journey?

I am grateful to all who have been part of my spiritual journey. My spiritual life has been most strongly influenced by several well-grounded Spiritual Companions, including my current Spiritual Companion, Stephen Wright, and the teachings of Jim FInley, Richard Rohr, Mirabai Starr, and Cynthia Bourgeault, among others. Participating in the two-year “Living School” of the Center for Action and Contemplation has grounded me in the Christian Contemplative Tradition and the teachings of the mystics from several faith traditions. My spouse and I are members of the ecumenical Iona Community which has a rich tradition of working for justice for all of creation. I am a life-long student of literature, story and poetry which I weave into my work. I am also familiar with many aspects of the Buddhist tradition. I have graduated from Certfied Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Training offered by Tara Brach and Jack Kornfield. This trauma-informed awareness training, along with a well-grounded background in Pastoral Counseling (Doctorate in Ministry), allow me to listen both from the heart and with a mind open to the wider relational and societal contexts which shape our lives. Participating in the “Seminary of the Wild Earth” through the Center for Wild Spirituality has broadened my sense of belonging and sources of wisdom beyond the human family. Thich Nhat Han’s language of interbeing speaks to my heart as well. We truly “inter-are”, dependent on countless other beings, elements and forces for our existence. We can embrace this reality with joy and curiosity. I believe this is how the divine manifests in and through everything that is.

I would be delighted and honored to journey with you as you listen for the Holy in your own story and your own embodied and heartful presence.
